About me

I studied Biochemistry at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM, Spain) and I received the Extraordinary Award of the Degree. During my degree project I worked on the exosome- mediated transfer of microRNAs during the Immune Synapse under the supervision of Prof. Sánchez-Madrid, and the results of this work were published in Nature Communications (Mittelbrunn et al. 2011). I did my Master´s degree in Molecular Biomedicine and in 2012 I obtained the FPU fellowship.

I did my PhD in Biochemistry (December 2016) under the supervision of Prof. Sánchez-Madrid and Dra. M. Mittelbrunn at UAM and Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Cardiovasculares (CNIC), with International and Cum Laude mention. During the first years of my thesis I worked on the mechanisms that control the sorting of specific microRNAs into exosomes. We discovered that the selective sorting of microRNAs is controlled by the protein hnRNPA2B1, which binds specific short sequence motifs present in miRNAs. Furthermore, we found that hnRNPA2B1 is sumoylated in exosomes, and this post- translational modification is important for the transport of miRNAs into exosomes. The results of this work were published in Nature Communications (Villarroya-Beltri et al. 2013). This work also resulted in the development of a patent (P201231503) OEPM, September 2012.

In 2014 I did a stay at Cornell University in New York, under the supervision of Dr. David Lyden and Dr. Héctor Peinado. During this time, I collaborated in a work to describe the role of melanoma-secreted exosomes in lymph node metastasis. During the last years of my thesis I studied the role of the post-translational modification ISGylation in the secretion of exosomes. We described that ISGylation inhibits exosome secretion by promoting multivesicular body protein degradation by the lysosome. The results of this work were published in Nature Communications (Villarroya-Beltri et al. 2016).

I have participated in several review articles that have been published in journals such as Journal of Cell Science, Seminars in Cancer Biology, Immunological Reviews, Methods in Molecular Biology and Frontiers Immunology. I have also collaborated in other projects, published in journals such as Cell Metabolism (Baixauli et al. 2014) and Nature Communications (Torralba et al. 2018).

I have presented my work in several national and international meetings, and I received the Best Oral Presentation Prize in the Extracellular Vesicles Society Annual meeting (Boston, USA, 2013). I have been the supervisor of a degree and master student, and I have performed several master and degree teaching activities at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid.

In 2017 I obtained a Juan de la Cierva Fellowship and I am currently working on stem cell biology at the Spanish National Cancer Research Centre (CNIO) in the group of Dr. M. Malumbres.
